March 2008 Issue

Issue Summary:

After overhaul, a 5R55W transmission has delayed engagements on garage shifts and possibly a flared 2-3 shift.

Explorer and Mountaineer models equipped with the 5R55W/S may exhibit a ticking or rattling noise coming from the bellhousing.

After overhaul, vehicles equipped with the 5R55W/S may exhibit a metallic ticking noise coming from the bellhousing, similar to the sound of a cracked flex plate or flywheel.

Vehicles equipped with the 4R44E transmission may exhibit a flare on the 2-3 upshift before or after overhaul.

On 2000-and-up Ford vehicles equipped with AX4S, AX4N or 4F50N transmissions, filling the transmission with fluid may be difficult.

A 2004-and-up vehicle equipped with the 4F50N transaxle may exhibit no movement in either forward or reverse range.

Issue Summary:

After overhaul or valve-body removal a VT20/25E continuously variable transmission In a Saturn Vue does not change ratios.

After overhaul, a Ford truck equipped with the 5R110W “Torque Shift” transmission may exhibit no torque-converter-clutch application and/or diagnostic trouble code P0741, torque-converter clutch stuck off.

A 5R110W in a Ford truck has no TCC application after overhaul, but a scan indicates that the signal for lockup was given.

Before and/or after overhaul, a Ford truck equipped with a 5R110W transmission may exhibit a noticeable delayed forward engagement and/or chatter while in first gear at various throttle openings.

Blocking of direct-clutch feed holes by the center-support sleeve causes loss of reverse and perceived loss of fourth gear in a Ford 5R110W.

Bonded pistons for the 5L40-E are now available from two aftermarket sources, and there are two options for installation tools.

Issue Summary:

At the beginning of the 2005 model year, an electronically controlled actuator replaced the throttle-valve cable on Dodge trucks with the 5.9-liter diesel and 48RE transmission.

After overhaul, an Aisin Seiki 450-43LE exhibits deteriorating shift quality and slips badly in reverse after the truck is driven a mile or two.

During the 2005 model year, Ford redesigned the low/reverse-clutch retaining snap ring for both diesel and gas applications.

2000-and-up Ford vehicles equipped with the AX4S, AX4N or 4F50N may be difficult to fill with fluid.

September 2007 Issue

Issue Summary:

A 1995 or earlier Isuzu, Chevy or GMC truck with the JR403E may have no engine-braking assist from the exhaust-brake system and also may have an intermittent no-crank condition and/or difficulty starting.

A Honda vehicle may come into the shop with code P1298 in addition to one or more solenoid codes stored.

On a 2003-04 Honda Accord, 2002-04 Element or 2002-04 CR-V with automatic transmission, the manual shift lever cannot be moved from the park position after replacement of the throttle body.

After replacement of the EPC solenoid in a Ford 4R70W/4R70/75E, the transmission slips or chatters at times. A line-pressure check reveals erratic line pressure.

August 2007 Issue

Issue Summary:

Some V-8 BMW models equipped with the ZF 5HP24 transmission may exhibit a buzzing or droning noise coming from the bellhousing area.

A Cadillac or Oldsmobile equipped with a 4T80-E may exhibit a no-move condition in the D4 range after an overhaul.

During the 2005 model year Ford Motor Co. redesigned the low-/reverse-clutch retaining snap ring in the 5R110W for both diesel and gas applications, replacing the two previous designs.

Chrysler issued a safety recall concerning an out-of-Park alarm in March 2006 for 2003-05 Dodge Ram pickups equipped with the 5.9-liter diesel and the 48RE transmission.

A defective fill-tube seal can cause shift shudders and/or harsh torque-converter application in some 2005-06 Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum and Charger, and Jeep Grand Cherokee models equipped with the Mercedes 722.6 or NAG 1.

July 2007 Issue

Issue Summary:

Before and after a rebuild, the transmission may experience premature failure of the reverse, direct or coast clutch.

The vehicle owner may complain of a delayed reverse and/or flare on the 3-4 shift and may feel bind-up in reverse and 4th. The unit may failsafe with a code for incorrect 4th-gear ratio.

After a rebuild, the converter clutch may not operate, possibly producing code P0741, “converter clutch slippage detected.”

BMW vehicles may exhibit a delay of two to 30 seconds from Park into Drive during the first cold start in the morning.

The malfunction indicator lamp is illuminated with code 55 or P0735 stored for “Gear Ratio Error in 5th Gear.”
There are no complaints of slipping or poor drivability.
Some vehicles may suddenly exhibit a bind-up on the 1-2 shift.

June 2007 Issue

Issue Summary:

In Allison 1000/2000 units, a sticking transmission-pressure-switch assembly can cause complaints of erratic shifting, a shift to the wrong gear and limp mode with the malfunction indicator lamp illuminated.

The forward-clutch drum in a 4R75E is susceptible to cracking in the area of the snap-ring groove, lead-ing to excessive slip in all forward ranges.

May 2007 Issue

Issue Summary:

In a GM vehicle with a 4T65-E transaxle, code P1887 (malfunctioning TCC release switch) can be caused by any of several electrical or mechanical issues.

On a 2004 or later Cadillac DeVille, switching the front tires with each other can illuminate a warning lamp in the driver information center.

April 2007 Issue

Issue Summary:

After overhaul, vehicles equipped with the Ford 5R55N may exhibit a soft or flared upshift into 3rd gear.

Vehicles equipped with the Chrysler 45RFE may exhibit a slip on take-off or no movement after overhaul or fluid change.

Corroded terminals in the PCM connectors can cause failsafe in a 1998 or later Dodge truck with Cummins diesel engine, resulting in 3rd-gear starts.
