August 2005 Issue

Issue Summary:

Immediately after overhaul of a 4L80-E and a road test at highway speeds, the vehicle returns to the shop with a total failure of the overdrive planetary gearset.

Immediately after overhaul of a 4L80-E, the engine will stumble or stall completely when the driver places the shifter into overdrive or reverse.

Technicians may have difficulty locating replacement case cooler-line fittings or the small retaining clips for a 4L80-E.

A service kit containing the forward sun gear, #5 bearing and sun-gear shell is now available for the Ford 4R70W.

July 2005 Issue

Issue Summary:

2000 and later Isuzu Trooper and BMW models with the 4L30-E transmission may exhibit diagnostic trouble code P1870 (torque-converter slip) or a shudder on TCC application.

Hyundai’s A4AF3 and A4BF2 units, used in 2000 and later Accent, Elantra and Tiburon, are almost identical to the A4AF1 and A4AF2, but with a few major exceptions.

After rebuild of a Hyundai A4AF3 or A4BF2, there is no forward movement in the Drive range, but reverse and manual low are OK. The transaxle may engage in Drive during high engine speeds, then neutral out and stop operating.

4T65-E
Differences Between GM and Volvo Applications

The 4T65-E transmission is used both in General Motors vehicles beginning in 1997 and in Volvo 80 series starting in 1999. There are several major differences between these units that can cause some problems with parts interchangeability.

May 2005 Issue

Issue Summary:

After overhaul the unit exhibits long, drawn-out shifts when performing under high load or at wide-open throttle.

Before or after overhaul, the transaxle exhibits second-gear starts or shifts out of sequence, even though a scan tool indicates that the computer commands are correct and electrical signals at the transaxle harness connector have been monitored and verified.

A vehicle equipped with the 4T65-E comes in with a complaint of no 3-4 shift at any time.

Some 2003-model 4T65-E transaxles have a newly designed input and third pawl-clutch assembly instead of the previous-design input and third sprag clutch.

March 2005 Issue

Issue Summary:

We provide exploded views of the valve body and identification of components in AW50-42LE units.

After overhaul, the speedometer on a Volvo/SAAB vehicle equipped with a 50-40 LE series transaxle may register in the Park position, and there may be no Reverse when the driver selects Reverse from the Park position.

February 2005 Issue

Issue Summary:

A 1993 or later Chrysler front-wheel-drive car or van may have a complaint of no speedometer operation and may have all the PRNODL lamps illuminated.

Some 1999-2000 vehicles equipped with the 42RE/46RE may exhibit a harsh engagement in reverse.

A 1996 or later Jeep or Dodge truck with an RE transmission may exhibit complaints of falling out of 4th gear and loss of TCC application. On diesel applications, the transmission may be stuck in 3rd gear and governor pressure may be 70 psi in Park.

January 2005 Issue

Issue Summary:

Some 2000-01 Dodge Ram Vans, Dakota and Ram pickups, and Durango SUVs with 46RE/47RE transmissions may exhibit a flashing Check Engine light, caused by diagnostic trouble code P1740 (torque-converter-clutch or overdrive-solenoid performance fault).

Before and/or after rebuild, vehicles equipped with Chrysler 47RE transmissions may exhibit soft TCC apply or repeated TCC failure.

A previously repaired Ford Motor Co. vehicle with the AX4S/AX4N transaxle may exhibit a feeling of surging with a complaint of engine-speed fluctuation during lockup application, followed by a noticeable “bump” at the end of lockup engagement.

December 2004 Issue

Issue Summary:

Before and/or after overhaul, 1995-2002 vehicles with 4R44E/55E or 5R44E/55E transmissions may exhibit soft or flared shifts, multiple gear-ratio-error codes or solenoid performance codes.

Some vehicles with 4R44E/4R55E/5R55E transmissions may exhibit delayed engagement in reverse and no engine braking in manual low.

Ford or Mazda vehicles with 4F27E or FN4A-EL transaxles may exhibit DTC P0741, torque-converter clutch stuck off, before or after overhaul.

Ford or Mazda vehicles with 4F27E or FN4A-EL transaxles may exhibit delayed forward engagement or premature forward-clutch failure.

Before or after overhaul, Ford vehicles with the 4F27E transaxle may exhibit failure due to lack of lubrication.

November 2004 Issue

Issue Summary:

Some 1996-2003 Ford Explorers, 2003 Lincoln Aviators and 1997-2003 Mercury Mountaineers have “neutral tow” capability.

4R70W units in 2000 & later Ford and Lincoln/Mercury vehicles may have a rattle or clicking sound until the 1-2 shift is completed.

Ford Motor Co. introduced a new rear-drive transmission with the designation 4R70E or 4R75E at the start of production for 2004.

Technicians may have difficulty translating the readings for transmission-fluid temperature, since most scan-tool data for TFT is represented in DC voltage but most manuals show only resistance charts.

October 2004 Issue

Issue Summary:

After overhaul, a 4L30-E in an Isuzu, BMW or Cadillac has no 3-4 shift; shortly thereafter the transmission is in failsafe and a gear-ratio-error code is stored.

A variety of drivability complaints can occur in Daewoo Lanos, Nubira and Leganza after repairs, possibly accompanied by codes including P1336.

In BMW M3, 530i and 320i with the ZF 5-HP-18 transmission, turning of the stator support in the pump cover may cause complaints of no power on takeoff, sudden neutralizing, bind-ups or failsafe.

Not using the factory-specified fluid in ZF automatic transmissions can result in damage to friction elements.

Audi or BMW vehicles equipped with the ZF 5-HP-19FL, ZF 5-HP-19FLA or ZF 5-HP-19 may exhibit a flare on the 2-3 upshift.

Damaged alignment dowel pins can result in damage to the torque converter in BMW 5-HP-18 and 5-HP-30 transmissions.

September 2004 Issue

Beginning with the 1999 model year, Isuzu NPR, GMC Forward Tiltmaster, Chevrolet Forward, Nissan UD and Mitsubishi Fuso trucks no longer use the JR403E Electromatic transmission.

These trucks now are equipped with the Aisin Seiki 450-43LE transmission (see Figure 1), a Toyota-designed transmission that is almost identical to a 1993-94 Toyota Land Cruiser A442F transmission.
