Shift Pointers

When an odd problem occurs once or twice on our technical helpline, we take note of it. But once we experience it three or more times it becomes a technical bulletin and/or seminar material.
Some Ford vehicles using the 5R110W are having an identity crisis. Let me explain. A 2010 Ford F450 Rollback with a 6.8L V-10 gas engine comes into Walkers Auto Trans & Repair with a complaint of a loss of power and transmission not shifting. When the truck was scanned it showed fault codes P0720 and P0722 for the output speed sensor. Scan data also showed that all transmission speed sensors read nothing.
It was decided to replace the OSS but the problem remained. Key on voltage checks at the OSS connector unplugged, revealed proper 12-volt supply, 5-6 volts on the signal wire and good ground on the remaining wire. Duane was considering he might have a bad module and decided to call ATSG for suggestions.
Gerald Campbell took the call and he suggested to Duane to verify OSS operation by checking its frequency. However, check the wiring for the TSS/ISS first. The reason he did this is ATSG has experienced this a few times before where the TSS/ISS was faulty due to broken wires yet store P0720 and P0722 for the OSS and none for the TSS or ISS.
Duane called back to say that he found broken wires at the TSS/ISS connector as was suggested (Figure 1).
He replaced the wire harness with an OE part at very reasonable cost (figures 2 and 3). A short road test confirmed that the ISS/TSS is having and identity crisis. It wants to be an OSS.
