Chrysler RH/RE late shifts and high pressure - Transmission Digest

Chrysler RH/RE late shifts and high pressure

You may find that these transmissions have a late 1-2 and 2-3 shifts along with high TV/line pressure.

The complaint

Before or after repairs, you may find that Chrysler RH and RE series transmissions have a late 1-2 and 2-3 shifts along with high TV/line pressure. OE idle line pressure specification is 55-65 PSI in the drive range.

The cause

The culprit here is mismatched TV plunger, bushing and retainer bracket (See Figures 1, above and 2, below). Figure 3 illustrates the difference in the TV cam shaft length between a TV cable system and a TTVA system.

The correction

Install the correct OE matched parts. Incorrectly matched parts will cause late 1-2 and 2-3 shift timing due to a loss of TV balance oil pressure or over-compression of TV plunger spring.

Service information

The Chrysler Torque-Flight TV system line up has remained the same since 1962. In 2005, when the TTVA motor was phased in on the 48RE, the TV system lineup had some changes incorporated to accommodate the new TTVA motor. There are several mismatched combinations that can occur between the TV cable and the TTVA system that will cause the late shift timing complaints.

Here are few of them:

  1. The TTY A spring retainer bracket installed on a TV cable system will over compress the TV plunger spring.
  2. The TV cable type plunger bushing .677″, installed on a TTVA system will over compress the plunger spring.
  3. A TTVA plunger .982-in. installed on a TV cable system is going to create the loss of TV system balance oil pressure.
  4. lf either the TTVA or TV cable plunger bushing is installed “backwards,” the large bore facing outward will create a loss of TV system balance oil pressure.

The RH and RE transmissions are very popular in the high performance truck market; attention to detail in this area will spare you some unneeded grief.
