Upgrading the Flat TCC Pistons for the 4L30-E & 4T65-E

The 4T65-E and 4L30-E share a number of issues related to the torque-converter clutch (TCC). Both transmissions are notorious for their TCC-application and shudder problems. A root-cause analysis of each application yielded similar results.

Advancing Clutch Technology

Last month we discussed pioneering new technology for differentials. Here we look at the cutting edge of manual-transmission clutch technology.

KM End-Clutch Failure

Have you ever noticed that most of the complaints or failures you have with a KM involve a burned end clutch? The complaints tend to be sliding 1-2, 2-3 spin-up, neutraling on the 3-4 shift, delayed engagements, no forward or no reverse.

I’ve seen every one of these complaints, only to find the end clutch burned. You might be thinking, “What does a burned end clutch have to do with a sliding 1-2 shift?”

Making Money in the Clutch

If you are in the transmission-repair business, you will work on a percentage of stick transmissions. This will inevitably lead to replacing worn-out or damaged clutches, since a large percentage of transmission damage starts with a worn or improperly adjusted clutch. There is good money to be made in clutch repair, and any time you remove a stick transmission, make sure you remove and inspect the clutch.
