Shift adaptation issues: Potential causes of a 2-3 shift bump
For shift adaptations to perform adequately, all required inputs must be functional. Of course, the solenoids and transmission components must also be functional. The type of inputs required for shift adaptations to function as designed will have some variations based on year, make and model. For example, when Chrysler pioneered their 41TE clutch to clutch
JF015E CVT sensor blues and red
In past articles in the “Technically Speaking” series, it has been pointed out how easy it is for the primary pulley exciter ring fingers to bend while working on a JF015E continuously variable transmission (as seen in figures 1, above, and 2, below). Ironically, these fingers can become bent while fixing a compromised secondary speed
The simple mistake that can leave the CVT 7 unable to reverse
In this situation, a Nissan Sentra comes in with a CVT 7 transmission that can go into reverse but not drive. The unit was disassembled only to find a snapped off sun gear in the low clutch hub (figure 1). After a new clutch hub was located, the unit was repaired and reassembled. Once it
The subtle differences in repairing Ford 6F35 generations 1 and 2
Many techs are aware of Generation 1 and Generation 2 differences with the Ford 6F35 transmission. There are, however, what seem to be a couple of subtle transitional changes that may be of interest to you. Figure 1 (below) shows an early Generation 1 valve body with the shallow SSA Damper pocket using the
Solving Ford 6F35 transmission fluid overheating issues
With 14 years of being on the road, the Ford 6F35 transmission has a sizeable list of issues requiring repair associated with it. Generation one units are the worst offenders as they have an additional problem to contend with: Ford no longer provides new solenoids for them. This means the hunt for good used solenoids
Getting out of a bind: Dodge 1500 545RFE transmission repair
A 2005 Dodge 1500 using the 545RFE transmission came into Fisher Auto Transmissions in Fairfield, New Jersey. It had a combination of both a bind-up on a 3-4 shift with code P0765 for a UD Solenoid Circuit Error being set. There was a time when these transmissions would have check-balls in the valve body that
The value of knowing your transmission gear ratios
If you have ever watched the movie Forrest Gump, you know the quote, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.” That quote holds a lot of value in the transmission industry these days. Transmissions may look the same from the outside, however, it is what is on
Sherlock Holmes Approach to an AB60 No-Move Situation
The effectiveness in diagnosing automatic transmission malfunctions is an art form. Although there are similarities among the wide varieties of transmissions on the road, each transmission has its own peculiarities. Aside from having mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical hardware systems to contend with, software/programming issues and various vehicle platforms make diagnostics much more difficult. Using scopes provides
Seeing the Forest AND the Trees
They say that the proverbial phrase “I couldn’t see the forest for the trees” means that a person or organization cannot see the big picture because it focuses too much on the details. I have seen this phrase used after days of diagnosing a transmission problem without resolve, yet the cause is staring you in
An RE7R01B Dilemma
Harold Grisham from Grisham Transmission Center had quite a dilemma on his hands. A 2016 Nissan Titan comes to his shop with a sudden no reverse with 60K on the odometer. This vehicle has the RE7R01B transmission in it and this is where the dilemma begins. After a basic inspection, it revealed the ATF level
Fast and Simple
Wayne Colonna describes repairing a BYFA-family transmission with shift complaints.
An Inexpensive Fix for the 4R70W
The bearing that is being used in this updated carrier is exactly like the one Ford uses in their 5R110W transmission for the front planetary. If your shop can lay hands on extra captured needle bearings, the fix is easy. Knock out two small pinion gears and you gain easy access to the bearing for replacement.
