Multiple Causes for P0562

A customer brought in a 2010 Dodge Journey AWD with the high-output 3.5-liter V6 engine and the 62TE automatic transmission. With a little more than 83,000 miles on the odometer, the complaint was for no upshifts and stuck in 3rd-gear failsafe mode. This concern had started out as an intermittent issue but now had become more regular.

Overdrive Solenoid Déjà vu All Over Again

About a month ago a customer came into our shop with a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country equipped with a 4.0 liter V6 engine and a 62TE transmission. He was complaining that it had a whining noise, and sometimes it would not shift and seemed to stay in the same gear. When the vehicle was hooked to the scan tool it had a code for the overdrive solenoid control circuit (P0760). The fluid was at the correct level and smelled like normal fluid; however, it was dark purple indicating possible metal contamination.

As one being involved with diagnosing transmission issues, developing technical information for seminars and bulletins as well as writing technical repair manuals, the one aspect of the transmission business I rarely think about is the R&R process. In Canada I hear them say “Ree and Ree” which is a nice quick way of describing the process of removing and re-installing the transmission. The lack of attention on this aspect of the transmission business does not indicate that it is insignificant. In fact, removing and re-installing transmissions is a critical aspect of the business. It is hard work and requires talent to do the job right.

‘Straightforward’ Transmission Repair Gets Complicated

The unit was filled with fluid and taken for a test drive. Upon return, the technician said the transmission was slipping and bucking between shifts. The first thing I did was to look for a check engine light, which was not on (yet). So I went for a test drive. The 1-2 shift was all right, but during the 2-3 shift, engine speed started fluctuating and the check engine light came on. We checked for codes again and found one for an intermittent crank-position circuit. I already had my suspicions as to the problem, but now it was time to prove it with the least possible fuss.

62TE: No Reverse

A vehicle using a 62TE transmission comes into the shop with a no-reverse complaint but drives well going forward. Even with the solenoid pack disconnected it still has no reverse but drives forward in failsafe third gear well.

Only One Way – the Right Way

Those of you who read my articles know that from time to time I may bore you with gear-train operation. It’s a part of the transmission’s operation that has always fascinated me. Understanding it goes a long way toward diagnosing various complaints, especially those involving noise.

In this instance I’m going to talk about a one-way-clutch device in a 62TE transmission (figures 1 & 2). But I first need to go through my boring explanation of the “foot bone being connected to the ankle bone” type details of the underdrive centerline shaft known as the underdrive compounder assembly (Figure 3).

Solenoid-Pack Information for the Chrysler 62TE

The 62TE solenoid pack is made up of six shift solenoids, one line-pressure solenoid, a temperature sensor and five pressure switches. The pressure switches are just like the ones in a 604 solenoid pack.
