Most Volkswagens that use the 01M transmission in the United States are non-Tiptronic. However, there is a Tiptronic version of this transmission that is used in other parts of the world, and you never know when one might pull into your shop for service.
The Tiptronic and non-Tiptronic versions have different separator plates and the castings are different. The Tiptronic style and the non-Tiptronic style are NOT interchangeable.
Identification information:
As an assembly, both styles look very much alike, even side by side, until you look closely. On the opposite side of the valve body from the EV-6 and EV-7 solenoids, there are three valve bores with three plastic end plugs on the non-Tiptronic valve body (Figure 1).
The Tiptronic style (Figure 2) has only two valve bores on this side of the valve body, with the center bore (K1 control valve) being permanently plugged. One bore uses a plastic end plug and the other bore uses an aluminum end plug with a round retaining pin.
