April 2009 Issue

Issue Summary:

A damaged bridge seal can result in pressure loss, causing a ZF 6HP26 in a 2002 BMW 745Li to be stuck in park.

After overhaul, a Honda vehicle with an MGHA-family transmission exhibits wrong-gear starts, and various solenoid DTCs may be stored.

Some 2002 Mazda MPVs can have harsh shifts with the MIL illuminated and/or the OD light flashing, and no DTCs stored.

Engine speed in a 2006 Honda Civic with a CVT sometimes stays around 4,000 rpm during deceleration as the vehicle is being driven straight ahead.

The 4T65-E – Does It Have a Twin?

In this article I’ll share with you some of the differences that I have found between the 4T65-E “Tiptronic” and the typical “non-Tiptronic” 4T65-E.

U151/U250 Solenoid Information

The U151 and U250 are five-speed transaxles that are used in the Lexus ES300, ES330, RX330 and RX350 as well as many Toyota vehicles from 2004 on. The U250 is used behind the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, and the U151 is used behind the 3.0-, 3.3- and 3.5-liter V-6 engines. The U151E and the U250E are front-wheel-drive transaxles, and the U151F is an all-wheel-drive transaxle.

Tremec T56 Magnum

BorgWarner designed and manufactured the T56 six-speed transmission, which is the premier six-speed on the market today. BorgWarner sold its stick-shift-transmission line to Tremec, and Tremec has continued to manufacture and refine the T56 design.

The Proper How-Tos of Scopin’

I’m working on a 1997 Chevy truck that has an “intermittent transmission,” as the owner puts it. He goes on to explain, “It works fine most of the time but when it gets into its spell of acting up, it seems like all I get is one or two gears of bad gas mileage and no power.”

What IS the Correct Name?

When you are ordering torque-converter parts from your supplier, it is important to be able to communicate your wants and needs to your salesperson. Frustrations run high on both sides when the purchaser asks for and receives a clutch when his intention was to buy a friction ring.

Sell It Slowly

If selling a rebuilt transmission or any other major repair were a race to see who could do it the quickest and probably for the least money, there would be lots of competition. Given the opportunity many of the owners, managers and service advisers in our business would shortcut the process to as few words as humanly possible, stated as quickly as their mouths can move. There may be several reasons why they are in such a hurry, but what they don’t realize is how much money this “need for speed” is costing them.

Another Transmission Mutation – Part 2

I’m working on a 1997 Chevy truck that has an “intermittent transmission,” as the owner puts it. He goes on to explain, “It works fine most of the time but when it gets into its spell of acting up, it seems like all I get is one or two gears of bad gas mileage and no power.”
