Wayne Colonna describes repairing a BYFA-family transmission with shift complaints.

An Identity Crisis

Some Ford vehicles using the 5R110W are having an identity crisis. Let me explain. A 2010 Ford F450 Rollback with a 6.8L V-10 gas engine comes into Walkers Auto Trans & Repair with a complaint of a loss of power and transmission not shifting. When the truck was scanned it showed fault codes P0720 and P0722 for the output speed sensor. Scan data also showed that all transmission speed sensors read nothing.

Not often do we get the opportunity to work with a tech that is having issues with a transmission in a hybrid vehicle. Not too long ago, Gerald Campbell had the chance to do just that with Carlos Costa from Transmission Technology. He had a 2012 Kia Optima 2.4L Hybrid using an A6MF2H transmission. There is no torque converter in this transmission. It does have an “engine clutch” and an “electrical motor” that sits in the area where the torque converter would be (Figure 1). The vehicle came into the shop with a “Stall on Engagement” complaint with repeated “Engine Clutch” burn out. In fact, when the trans was removed and disassembled, the engine clutch was smoked, and the clutch plates frozen/welded together.

The P0776 Twist

Tom from “Transmission Shop” in Minnesota had a customer come in with a 2012 Honda Odyssey with a six-speed BYKA transmission experiencing erratic shifts. It had an intermittent and inconsistent 2-3 shift where sometimes it would have a slight flair and bump while other times it would experience a large flair and a bump. Other times it shifted into 3rd then neutral and back into 3rd.

Squirrelly

The owner of a 2008 Toyota Camry with a 3.5L engine powering a U660E transmission brought his vehicle in to Deltrans with hard shifts. Bill Harris road tested the vehicle to verify the complaint. In doing so he not only verified the owner’s complaint, he also discovered that it did not shift past 4th gear.

Aside from a few items such as the aux pump and the park lock solenoid, it’s a typical DCT transmission designed for performance.

The reason such a new vehicle came in to Jan’s shop for repairs is the owner had inadvertently bottomed out the car breaking the transmission’s case.

No Forward Good Reverse – A Leave Out or a Blow Out

There have been reports in the field that a garage shift from reverse to drive produces a “snapping” sound, which has been traced to a defect with the previous design output shaft assembly. Installing the “UNIGEAR” output shaft assembly seemed to have eliminated the garage shift noise.

Spring Season

A 2006 FORD Explorer with a 4.0 engine using the 5R55W/S type transmission came back to Jeremy at Warren Transmissions 8 months after the original rebuild. The customer stated that all was good prior to climbing a hill when it felt like he was losing power and the engine began to rev quite high like the trans was slipping. Customer said he managed to nurse it home.

The Pressure is Off

Jon at Wilson Transmissions received a 2010 Venza with a 3.5L/U660E combo from a used car lot. All seemed to be working good other than many dash indicators lit up. After scanning the vehicle and finding pressure switch codes (P0872 for TFP Sensor/Switch C and P0877 for TFP Sensor/Switch D), Jon ordered a TFP switch/TFT sensor assembly from the Toyota dealer.

VLP-Line Pressure Too High

A 2014 Dodge Journey 2.4L with a 41TES transmission came in to Electronica & Transmisiones in Buenos Aires Argentina. It had code P0869 set for Line Pressure High. Leonardo Luercho went out with the vehicle using his scan tool to begin his diagnostic approach.
