Shift Pointers

I don’t think I have anything weird for you this month, just some differences in 4T65-E applications requiring special overhaul-kit items that you need to be aware of when it’s on your bench.
When Volvo introduced the S80 in 1999 (see Figure 1), it was equipped with a V 6 engine (see Figure 2). Volvo engineers realized that the AW50-42LE was not durable enough to handle the heavier vehicle coupled with the higher horsepower and torque of a V 6 engine, especially one with a turbocharger.
So, Volvo made a deal by which GM supplies it with the 4T65-E transaxle, which has proven itself behind domestic V 6 engine applications (obviously, before Ford bought Volvo) and is still being used.
Will the 2004 or 2005 model have an AX4N? Who knows?
Now to the differences. The valve-body gaskets are different between the domestic version of the 4T65-E and the Volvo version. This, of course, means the spacer plates are different.
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate the differences in the gaskets between the valve body and spacer plate and between the spacer plate and channel plate. The circuits that are different between the two seem to affect forward engagement, manual first and second, and the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts.
GM part number 24206578 is the valve-body to spacer-plate gasket for the domestic 4T65-E.
GM part number 24204500 is the spacer-plate to channel-plate gasket for the domestic 4T65-E.
Using TransTec as an example, its part numbers are 12525 and 12526, respectively, and the gaskets also are supplied in its overhaul kits.
GM part number 24212825 is the valve-body to spacer-plate gasket for the Volvo 4T65-E.
GM part number 24212828 is the spacer-plate to channel-plate gasket for the Volvo 4T65-E.
Again, TransTec offers a valve-body gasket kit that contains only the valve-body gaskets for the Volvo and carries part number 4752.
The second difference is the passenger-side axle seal. The domestic 4T65-E seal and the 4T65-E seal for the Volvo are different (see Figure 5). The domestic seal is provided in overhaul kits, but the Volvo seal is available only from the car manufacturer and must be obtained from the dealer.
24208919 is the part number for the Volvo passenger-side axle seal from a GM parts dealer. S445681 is the number for the Volvo passenger-side axle seal from a Volvo parts dealer.
No brain burner this time, just some info that can help get that job out the door.
Until next time.
